Mud Room and Back Stairs
"The Gardener's Storage Area"

Before:
The back stairs in this house lead to the kitchen, the Maid's Quarters, a guest bath, the backyard garden and the garage. This is a view from the doorway of the garage showing the stairs, hallway and a small mud room/closet.

After:

Since Rosa was designing for a showhouse, she transformed this very utilitatian area into a decorative element. The doors of the closet were taken off to create a vignette that Rosa calls "The Gardener's Storage Area" where the gardener can store his or her tools.

She carries out the garden theme throughout the back stairs area with a mural of flowers and a bird's nest hand-painted on the walls. There is no furniture in this area due to allow for smooth traffic flow by many visitors touring the house. Had she been designing this area for a regular client, the considerations for traffic flow would have been very different.
